10 Reasons to own your own business

I have read many posts on the technical and Jargon filled reasons to start your own business. This article is not going to be like that. Below I list the real reasons. Reasons that I feel hit home with most like minded business owners, because if you are in it just for the money, you wont last long.

Owning your own business is hard and requires a large amount of your time, however it can unlock unlimited wealth and freedom, which are the good bits so lets focus on these.

1.It can be life changing – Yes, at the beginning the life change may not feel like it’s for the better, when you are running everything by yourself and worrying if you can pay the bills at the end of the month. But if you graft and stick in there, that change will happen and you will never look back.

2.It will unlock skills you didn’t ever believe you had – you may have always struggled with a certain skill in the past. For example you may have been terrible at maths at school, but once you are sitting down with your monthly accounts in front of you then incredibly it all makes sense. Reason being, you have a vested interest in it. Amazingly you will continue to experience this through many aspects of your business. You may even realise you have an eye for design – a great place to start honing this skill is 99 Designs

3.You may get huge boost in your financial situation – This probably won’t happen overnight. It takes work and a real understanding of your business as well as its true ability to generate profit. However, over time this will happen and you will change your life forever.

4.You will open up other opportunities – This happens daily. Once you are operating you need to keep your eyes open. Spotting these opportunities is a great way to grow your business. However be cautious and get the foundations right before you start trying to expand into other areas. Remember an idea is just that, an idea!

5.You will become the master of your destiny – In a good way or bad, depending on you. If you have your nose pointing in the right direction and don’t  give up, there will be no stopping you. However if you don’t take this responsibility seriously then you will end up the same way 80% of new businesses do…Failed!

6.With some serious work you will be able to get out of the 9 to 5 rat race. You may wonder sometimes how the masses run the same race every day for their whole lives. I have always known that that’s not for me (not saying I haven’t done it though). By owning your own business you will kiss this goodbye. Ultimately you do have to work within the times that the work place operates, however you do have the freedom to find your most productive time and take of advantage of that, no matter when it is! Are you a night owl or an early bird? I am a night owl.  Late at night, I get my best thinking and work takes me half the time. If I was still in corporate I’d probably still work late at night as well as all day!Find your time and squeeze all you can out of it.

7.You may be able to help others around you – As your success grows you will be able to contribute to worthwhile causes around you. Whether this is a community outreach project or offering guidance to a local small business. Either way this is a great spin off of having a successful business.

8.You will be able to sit on your death bed and say “ I gave it my all! ” – A big one. I always think about this. When my time comes I don’t want to be wishing I had done more. You only have one chance at this life, so what have you got to lose? Get away from the TV and go for it!

9.You can do something every day you have a passion for– Do you have a passion for what you do? If you don’t it will be nearly impossible to excel. There have been numerous studies on this. Doing a job without having passion for it, is a major contributor to depression, and related illnesses. So do what you love and be happy.

10.You won’t dread getting out of bed every morning  – If you dread getting up in the morning, then believe me there is something wrong. For years I felt like this and dreaded going to work…I was working in some monotonous job, that I cared little about. Once you own your own business, you will experience drive as you never have before.

I hope these 10 Reasons to own your own business, have given you some inspiration to get going on your idea. Remember do your research, get your plan together and put your head down.  And START. Just START.

I really recommend the book ‘Wake Up and Change Your Life‘ by Duncan Bannatyne click on the title link to purchase it off Amazon.com or click here. It’s not a long drawn out read, and its full of relevant information and case studies. I really do recommend it if you are looking to start out on your business journey.
