Make performance reviews relevant

Staff performance is what drives business success, yet for many business owners the definition of performance across a variety of roles within their company can appear vague and quite difficult to review and identify.

In its most basic form the below is the solution for performance success:

Motivation + Relevant Skill Set = Performance

As an example, you can have the most motivated individual but he has no training, industry experience or even natural talent in that specific area. Conversely you can have a very talented and experienced individual suited to their role but for whatever reason, and there are many, they can be demotivated. Neither of these scenarios will see a business flourish, in fact it will most likely fail.

It is therefore logical that as business owners we need to always be on the pulse of our staff performance levels. As a group and as individuals. As mentioned before this seems like a dark art to many business owners and, as such, they simply brush performance reviews under the carpet or they go through the motions without using a relevant process to assess role in the company. The company Accountant cannot be reviewed on the same basis as the Logistics Manager when trying to identify the level of delivery within each role.

The key to solve this is to make performance reviews relevant. How can this be achieved?…

We shy away from Jargon on this blog as we think replacing simple phrases with a confusing fancy version is a waste of time. However, one that we cannot ignore for the purposes of relevant performance reviews is Key Performance Indicators, or KPI’s for short. This phrase in itself immediately scares many people and they straight away assume that benchmarking and analysis of staff performance is something that only large multinational or blue chip company’s can do… well they are wrong, and it is a very easy process that will revolutionize your business, whether you are a 2 man band or a 1000 + staff base.

We will show you the simple way to make performance reviews relevant for the different roles within your business. On the blog we will show you how easy it is to set up KPI’s for a broad spectrum of staff roles within a business from the Shelf Packer through to your top sales team. KPI’s don’t lie…. And you will then be able to benchmark the level of delivery from ALL of your staff on a monthly basis and be able to begin to identify poor performance and whether it relates to a problem with motivation or skill sets.
